The Earl of Lemon

Green White Blend by DAVIDsTEA

Smooth operator

This deliciously smooth white tea blend is basically Earl Grey’s younger, cooler cousin. It’s lightly floral, delicately sweet and refreshingly citrusy, studded with yogurt pieces for a touch of creaminess. But before you take your first sip, give yourself a moment to enjoy its fresh, lemon-and-bergamot aroma. It gives the old classic a welcome breath of fresh air.

Ingredients: White bai mu dan tea, green tea, lemon peel, freeze-dried yogurt, marigold blossoms.

I have to admit that while I was preparing this cold brew, I thought it was a totally different tea. I meant to make some iced Mandarin Silk, but apparently grabbed this instead. By the time I realized the leaves were already in there, but Kittena was nice enough to send me quite a bit so I’ll still be able to make it hot! This sounds like it would be interesting cold anyway, I mean anything lemon practically screams to be tried over ice.

It brewed up really pale, and I was wondering if maybe I didn’t give it enough time… but 14 hours should be more than enough! Indeed, it’s quite strong, I guess it’s just a light tea. The lemon is really front and center, bright and a bit assertive. It’s tempered by a nice creaminess, with backing floral notes from the white base. Honestly I’d never associate this with Earl Grey if I didn’t know there was bergamot in there, it’s very much a nice lemon white to me. Not that it’s a bad thing, I think lemon overpowers other citrus notes very easily so it masks the bergamot. It reminded me a bit of a lemon tart filling, not mouth-puckeringly sour but with a bit of a bite and a nice sweetness as well.

I decided to give this tea another shot and cold brewed the last of my sample from Kittenna. Last time there was almost no bergamot, it was just a nice lemon tea. This time something different happened: I think maybe I just used more leaf? But it also brewed for a little bit longer. In any case, it was a success!

This definitely reads as an Earl Grey now. The bergamot and lemon make this a very citrus-y blend, but it’s tempered by a strong creaminess. I got the cream last time (presumably from the yogurt bits?) but it is a LOT stronger now! In fact, it’s almost like an EGC. Bumping up the rating a bit, I am loving this!

This was a sample from Sandy. Thanks! What a lovely tea. I’m surprised because I’m not that big a fan of bergamot, but this is blended rather well.

I only pick up hints of bergamot in here just past the creamy lemon flavor. It’s reminiscent of baked good. The lemon is sweeter rather than tart. The bergamot definitely hangs out in the background, just serving as support for the lemon. Bai mu dan makes a good showing and adds a pepper like note to wrap things up.

The dry tea smells like a regular earl grey to me. Heavy on the bergamot, which I’m not always fond of.

Didn’t note what it smelled like steeped, oops :)

This one tastes like a really lovely, light, creamy earl grey! I quite like it! I’m definitely getting creaminess, likely from the yogurt, and the bergamot would likely be the reason it tastes like earl grey… but it’s so light! And no astringency at all, not even a hint, which is probably another reason I like it. This might go on the re-purchase list before it’s gone :)

ETA: Second infusion of this is nearly as good as the first. I increased the time to 4 minutes, and got a lovely brew smelling lightly and sweetly of bergamot, and tasting much the same. I think I prefer this to regular earl grey…

Accompanying notes for my comparison of Earl of Lemon with 52teas’ Ginger Ale Bai Mu Dan.

This tea is definitely stronger than Ginger Ale Bai Mu Dan, and I don’t think that’s because I used more tea. The bergamot is sharper, and I can taste the twinge of lemon. Both have a lovely sweet creaminess though. It might be a touch more apparent in this one due to the inclusion of yogurt. There is a lovely aftertaste of white tea with both too, though.

As stated in my Ginger Ale Bai Mu Dan review, these are too similar (even though distinctly different) for me to really make a choice. I’d be happy with either in my cupboard, but since Earl of Lemon’s currently easier to obtain, it will be the winner by, say, 1/4 point.

ETA: I think this one accidently got a 15-minute re-steep because someone set a count-up not a count-down timer (me). So I was getting a little too much sharpness from the bergamot, or bitterness from something, although there was a nice lingering creaminess.

Another tea subjected to cold-brewing/icing!

This one got the 30 seconds in 82 degree water treatment, then made up to 2 cups with cold water.

It ended up being pretty tasty, but there was too much bergamot for me. I seem to recall thinking this more than once with my new packet of this tea (I purchased just a small sample initially, then went back for a bit more), and that’s a bit of a turnoff. I’m really wishing 52teas’ Ginger Ale Bai Mu Dan was still around, because it was definitely lighter on the bergamot and I think I’d enjoy it more. I still have about a cup’s worth left thanks to Missy & Dylan’s generosity, but I don’t think I want to waste it by cold-brewing.

Anyhow, in addition to the strong bergamot flavour, this was mild and a little creamy. So I did very much enjoy it cold-brewed, I just wish the bergamot was a little more in the background, and less inyourface.

Not sure what sort of tea mood I was in tonight, because this one didn’t quite fit either. Also learned that 3 minutes makes for too strong of a bergamot flavour; I preferred it to be lighter and more subtle, allowing the white tea to shine a bit more.

I am particular about Earl Grey. I like it with other flavors in there too more than I like it straight. Sometimes it reminds me too much of cleaning, and I should be cleaning most of the time so…yeah.

I got this as a sample, I named off two things I wanted to try and decided the third sample should be a surprise, so this is what I got.

It’s very lemony, but still tastes a bit like Earl Grey. I’ve only had black tea based ones, so this is different. It’s a lot lighter, and I just love the way the lemon has really given it a fresh, citrusy taste.

The yogurt chips gave it a bit of creaminess, and it almost adds tartness. The tart definitely tastes yogurt based rather than lemon. Kind of weird, but I’ll still take it.

And, in what surprises me most coming from the other white DavidsTea blends I’ve had, I can actually taste white tea!

I probably won’t get this again due to having so much tea but I really like it. I was expecting to have to give it away but it has surprised me!

Smell: just like an earl grey
Colour: a nice yellow
1st steep: Surprisingly mellow taste, with the white tea taste peeking through. I definitely get the earl grey taste but much more mellow and slightly sweeter with the little creamy touch from the yogurt.
2nd steep: 90degrees, 4min—still citrusy, but less earl grey tasting. It is still sweet with a hint of creaminess
I will certainly re-buy this one

Grabbed my usual 10g of this one today when at the store to try it out. Dry it smells lovely, all lemony with no backhints or anything making me question if I’m going to like it. Once brewed my first sips were mostly a light lemon flavouring, making me wonder where the cream was, other than in the ever so slight floaties I saw as I pulled my infuser. A few more sips and I found the cream and it added a nice note. As the cup cooled, though, I found that I noticed the flavour less and less, and just kept drinking it because it was there more than anything else.

It is a nice tea, but I don’t think I’ll be restocking since I already have a white lemon which I prefer. Still, this is the first tea from Davids in a while that I’ve given a solid ranking to!

DAVIDsTEA

Dry Leaf Nose: Delicate white and green tea, with notes of lemon and bergamot.

Liquor: Medium-gold colour, with a clear liquor. Combination of white and green tea aromas, with soft notes of lemon and bergamot.

Flavour: A delicate, naturally sweet tea with light lemon and bergamot notes. Very smooth and very satisfying,

If you’ve read any of my other tea reviews, you know that I am a bit of an Earl Grey aficionado. So, I tend to steer clear of Earl Grey variations… until now.

The premise intrigued me, since it’s not uncommon for people to sometimes add a squeeze of lemon to their Earl Grey. The lemon here reminds me strongly of Lime Gelato… except substitute lemon for lime and add a dash of bergamot, not that the bergamot is particularly strong. It’s an interesting variation on a well-known tea, but it should be called Lemon Gelato instead, with the yogurt adding a creamy gelato-ness to the lemon + bergamot.

I took steep.it‘s advice and steeped it at 85°C for only a minute, and it turned out lemony with a hint of cream. No bitterness. Managed to get two steeps out of the leaves as well. Quite a nice flavoured white/green tea, not sure if I’ll restock once my 10g are gone… might have to let it grow on me a bit.

This smells like the most amazingly creamy lemon infused Earl Grey I’ve been looking forward to trying this since I’ve discovered DT’s many amazing re-imaginations of the classic Earl Grey profile.

As for taste it’s superbly creamy and the lemon is perfectly light and refreshing.

I love this it’s a wonderful reinvention of an Earl Grey..creamy and lemon-infused it’s delicious and perfectly composed.

I love earl grey teas – however have been unsuccessful in finding one that comes in loose leaf form. So far they are either not bergamonty, too bitter, poor black tea. With DT’s “earls garden” I found it tasted like raisins!!! My fav has been Stash’s “double bergamont”. Stash? BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

So, when this “Earl of Lemon” tea came out, I was pumped. White bai mu dan tea, Green tea (and I tweeted DT and found out its a chinese green, not sencha green) and yogurt? I love yogurt in tea!
Lets give this one a shot!

DRY: very light tea, so i got alot for 50g, yesss! also states 1.25 tsp a cup, even more savings! Nice colouring of light green, yellow and white squares that look sparkely – yogurt im guessing. The dry leaves smell like earl grey, but lighter in a more refreshing way.

STEEPTED: Light yellow green. I found one of those sparkley squiares and smushed it to taste – yogurt, but spicy strong bergamonty! wahhhh!

TASTE: Earl grey (duh) – hit of lemon, no bitterness and slightly creamy. Light, but in the white tea/green tea light way but packed with citrus. The bergamont comes out well, as does the lemon. Very similar to “Lady Earl Grey” tea, but actually more lighter, more lemon and that hint of creamyness. Since there is no bitterness, I feel like adding cream/sugar would take away from enjoying the flavour.

RECOMENDATIONS: to peeps who like earl grey (duh #2). People who like Lady Earl greys or want to try somethign similar. If you loooove bergamont, this tea comes out as a moderate level of it. However this tea is pretty light, a green or white tea drinker might want to try to bridge into earl greys.

COMMENTS: I feel like Captain Picard, but more delicate and female, LOL, when I drink this tea. I like the yogurt in it and it is a perfect at balancing out the flavours. I love bergamont (hence liking double berg teas) and this is a satisfactory level – any more in this tea and it would be kinda nutty strong and I couldn’t enjoy the white tea.
I don’t agree that this tea is like DT’s “Lime gelato” – lime gelato is quite strong in lime, tart, and the sencha green and yogurt comes out more, whereas this one is more true to earl grey flavor, bit of lemon/yogurt and lighter with the white tea. I’d say it’s very much “Lady Earl Grey” like i said earlier.

Hmmm.. Id say this has been the best Earl grey tea i’ve had in loose leaf form. I wish the yogurt came out more or maybe had white chocolate instead – or maybe that is too crazy? I’ll play with steeping times (seen other reviewers doing 1minute steeps) and see how it goes. Overall, very solid, lovely tea. I love you Davidstea!

DUNDUNDUHHNNNN!

I think I really only crack open this tea when I’m sick. Which I am. NOOO! It was my husband’s fault. He barely gets sick, and when he’s sick its a little sniffle. When the cold is passed to me it’s mutated into much worse.

So, lots of lemon slices and honey in this cup of Earl of Lemon. I think I’m not tasting much. A teeny bit of citrus and sweet. Craptastic! Hopefully my cold hasn’t hit my sinus killing my sense of taste again. Thankfully my lemon tree has gone beserk – I will be raiding it after this post to create delicious KILL COLD tea.

Uggg, I guess I caught a bug and I’ve been feeling sick in the yucky throat way. With that said, I’ve been just craving lemony teas. I’ve been drinking Butiki’s Good Morning Sunshine a lot, but I thought I’d change it up with Earl of Lemon.

Earl of lemon. Hot. Lemon slice. Honey. Heheh!

Very yummy, pretty sure my taste buds are shot as I cannot taste a few elements I usually taste with this tea.

Now time to dig around and find my other lemon teas to drink while I work on the SHAWL OF DOOOOOOM! (making good progress on it)

My big box of DavidsTea came today. This is absolutely lovely.

The aroma in the bag is fabulous. Very lemony with light bergamot notes. It steeps up clean and bright with a hint of creaminess and retains the lovely light lemony smell. I added a touch of honey for sweetness.

I typically like my Earl Greys resplendent with bergamot. It’s barely noticeable in this one, and that is just fine. I will buy this again and again.

I picked up 10g of this and the manager told me that it was really good—and she is not a fan of Earl Grey…neither am I.

I finally got around to trying it today and WOW and I am really impressed! Normally it’s a meh taste for me, but I am really liking the smooth and citrusy flavours with a hint of bitterness that you normally encounter with earl greys.

I am definitely going to get a tin of this :)!

oh my goodness. if you love lemons, and i do, then this tea is THE ONE.
it smells like fresh zested lemons, so bright and happy!
the flavour is fantastic as well, white and green teas as a base was an excellent idea, they blend well together and are not overpowering, letting all the lemon flavours shine. the freeze-dried yogurt adds a lovely light touch of sweet cream that compliments everything else really nicely.
definitely DEFINITELY stocking up big time on this one.
ahhh, i’m in tea love!

La la la LEMON!

So I have been on a mission the last week to try all of DT’s Earl Grey themed blends and at this point I have almost crossed them all off my list most recently adding The Earl of Lemon to the list, it was hard to select between this and Countess of Seville, next time Countess, next time.

Dry this tea has a lovely aroma that just makes me feel great, it almost reminds me of a lemon meringue pie just not as powerful, this was pretty much the selling feature for me on this tea. The steeped aroma is even lighter with a hint of your typical Earl Grey aroma combined with a lemon twist.

The final brew is very light in color and has a softer taste then I was expecting, that said it was absolutely great its hard to say but this may have trumped Cream of Earl Grey as my favorite Earl Grey blend from David’s it’s certainly a different twist on a classic, but man oh man it is just so good to drink. Will certainly be keeping this on hand for myself and friends that want to branch out from the traditional Earl Grey. Probably would have scored 100 points but the soft flavor ruined it for me a bit if it was 10-15% more flavorful this would be a deadly tea.

This is tea is just so deliciously good. From the first sip; it made me nostalgic for a slice of lemon tart, made either by my handsome boyfriend or my lovely grandmother. That’s exactly how I can describe the taste; like biting into a home-made lemon tart. I just love the soothing flavours and find this a good tea to have before bed; as it makes me sleepy and relaxed. I have tried it both hot and iced and honestly have to say that it tastes good either way. So this summer I can definitely see myself lounging in the sun and sipping on some chilled Earl of Lemon.

So I felt like having this tea last night while tutoring. It was like having tea and a treat together, I mean tea itself is a treat, but this tea is like the ultimate treat for me.

I had this tea last Friday ( the 25th) alongside my breakfast.

Dry Leaf: Green and White tea with lemon peels and freeze-dried yoghurt. Usually there is a fragrant yoghurty taste, but it was light on friday morning. For breakfast I used my teal forlife tepot which makes about one and a half cups, depending on the size of the mug. It’s perfect for having a small amount of tea, but still wanting more than just one cup.

Steep: Greenish-white colour. Hints of fruit in the taste. Green tea influneces the colour of the tea, though it is a white tea. The flavours of the tea were very sublte that morning, perhaps I didn’t use enough leaves to get a stronger steep.

This tea has a perfect lemon flavor, it tastes natural, the creaminess of the yougurt complements it perfectly and it has a fine balance between calm and refreshing brew. Some of the David’s teas are known for their more flavorful teas that make you question how much of natural stuff goes into them but this one feels just right. Due to the ingredients it’s not something I would drink often but it’s a great choice for when I feel citrusy.

Smell: Woooah nelly that’s lemony. Earl Grey in the background while lemon punches you in the face.
Colour: Very pretty golden yellow
Taste: Delicious! So light and refreshing.. Hard to say what I taste first but Earl Grey is there, and lemon is there, and a subtle creaminess is kicking around.
Will try another steeping and see what happens.

I’m always nervous with green teas, but this one is beautiful and so-far, foolproof. Yum!

Starting to figure this tea out.. I don’t steep too long to keep it from becoming TOO earl grey-y, add a splash of milk and WOW. It is really good. Gave it to company recently and everyone was blown away and planning to head to David’s asap. A very good intro tea as it isn’t too crazy. Just a great twist of a classic. Yum I am making more tonight!

I am a huuuuuge fan of this tea! I love earl gray as it is but I have to keep my caffeine down so I decided to give this a whirl.
It’s awesome! I could make a pot of this a drink it all day long it’s so light, flavourful and refreshing! Once steeped you can really taste the bergamot and the lemon!

I accidentaly steeped this at 98 degrees my first time trying it and I found it still as delightful as if steeped at 82 degrees.

I will admit right off the bat that the only reason I tried this tea was because I’m an Adventure Time fan. (Earl of Lemongrab, anyone?)

The scent was pleasant and lemony, but the tea was… meh. (I suppose I could make an “UNACCEPTABLE!!!!” joke, but it’s not that bad. It’s just… well, “meh”.)

The tea itself was extremely bitter, to the point where I had a hard time drinking it. The lemon flavour did come through, though, and it was nice enough, although it wasn’t enough to offset the bitterness of the tea.

Definitely won’t be trying this one again.

Was not entirely impressed by this one, and I doubt it’ll be on my re-buy list the next time I pop up to DavidsTea. The creaminess (enhanced by my usual sugar + milk, no doubt) was a little too… something. Nothing good. :\
