Black Dragon Pearls

Black Tea by Teavana

Fashionably rare spring-harvested black tea pearls are as coveted as the legendary gems they were inspired by. Just as their bejeweled counterparts take years to become perfection, each tea pearl consists of thirty leaves and buds hand picked and immediately rolled before the leaves can dry. The famed pearls carry sweet undertones of chocolaty romance, creating a smooth, sweet-bodied exquisiteness in each cup.

The first time I had this, I was underwhelmed by the comparison to Teavivre’s.

This one is better brewed Western-style, I think.

And as I’m sitting here printing out literally hundreds of papers for my Creative Writing class (no text, just 20 odd PDFs of poems and stories that we have to print out) I figured it was a good time to give this one another go.

Steeped with water a little bit hotter than Teavana recommends – I used just-off-boiling instead of 195. But it’s still good. It’s rich and thick, and it’s not overly astringent the way it was the first time I had it. It reminds me a bit of late winter, when the leaves have all fallen off he trees and the sky is dark and grey – it feel s like it would fit in there pretty well. Good tea.

This is one of those teas that I knew I’d like before I tried it. It was rumored to be very smooth and have chocolatey undertones – just what I love in a tea. It is also in little round pearls. Love pearls, poofs, and any other traditional, hand made tea shapes!

I was not in the least disappointed. I used 4 pearls for my 10oz brew mug and it’s perfect. Unsweetened chocolate and so, so, so smooth. Elixir of the Tea Gods smooth. This is actually my second time having it, and the last time I got 4 steeps out of these babies! Yes, the tea is exorbitant ($15 for 2oz) but since I can have so many steeps with them, it makes for a totally reasonable indulgence. I’d buy these again in less than a heartbeat!

Farewell, my lovely Black Dragon Pearls! You will be missed. I am astonished how quickly I drank up your roasty chocolatey wonderment — I only added you to my cupboard in mid-July!

Now that Starbucks have bought Teavana — my head spins. I’m not holding my breath on being able to buy Black Dragon Pearls on every corner, but… can you imagine?!?!

After reading The Purrfect Cup’s tasting note about this tea yesterday, I knew exactly what I was going to drink today! Sweet, chocolatey. So flavorful but not one bit harsh. The second steep is even better than the first. You can go steep after steep after steep, too. Expensive? Yes. Delicious? YES!

I only ordered two teas from Teavana during their Heavenly Sale, but this was one of them. I remembered hearing good things about this tea, and I was out of black dragon pearls, which I love. At that price, how could I not have bought 2oz? I used 5 pearls for my 12oz mug, as is my usual dose when I drink this type of tea.

It smells good, but I also can’t quite place the notes in the aroma. Some toasted grains, perhaps, and maybe a hint of chocolate, but it doesn’t smell powerfully chocolatey. The flavor is good. Definitely notes of cocoa powder, with some slight honey-molasses notes without the sweetness. In comparison to Teavivre’s Black Dragon Pearls, it’s the natural sweetness (and hyper chocolatey-ness) that I’m missing. I won’t have any problems drinking these pearls, but I won’t really crave them like I crave the Teavivre pearls. I have yet to find an example that I like better than that one!

Swapdown this morning (not this tea, but getting rid of a few others, and actually not acquiring new teas in return, just postage), leaving me with 138 teas! Woot! It’s a good thing because I am approaching some travel times, which means few sipdowns, and then in less than a month I will be in Paris, buying way too many teas.

Anyway, this tea. Two ounces of black dragon pearls, which is what I had ordered of this one, is really not a lot. Some teas are like that I guess! My pouch already seems pretty empty, but may have more servings in it than I think. This tea is good but not great. It shows its Yunnan roots in the light hay notes. They discontinued selling this tea at the same time that I bought it on clearance, so perhaps my pearls are fairly old, but these pale in comparsion to most of the other pearls I’ve had. I don’t get much chocolate, I don’t get sweetness. I get a fairly normal non-golden Yunnan black tea that just happens to be rolled into pearls. Well, if I drink this up then I can order some pearls from Teavivre (my favorite!)

This is an incredibly delicious black tea. It has sweet undertones, but they aren’t so harsh that the tea should at all be considered a sweet tea. It’s perfect!

My my my its been a long while since I’ve been on here. Still an avid tea drinker, but not so much a social networker……Mmmmm, this is so smooth just as other have described. I put about 6 pearls in my 16oz perfecta maker, but to make things a bit different, I added 1tsp of honeybush vanilla. No german rock sugar like I’m used to but a teaspoon of white honey. This is almost too smooth. But is definitely appreciated on a stressful day as today.

Good. Not great. Might try again in the future, but not top of the list.

I really enjoy this tea first thing in the morning with a little bit of table sugar added to it.

This tea is one of my favorites for that mid-afternoon stretch. You know, when it’s 2pm and you’re struggling to stay awake from lunch and it’s not quite time to go home yet.

I love adding milk to this, as it reminds me of boba milk tea (though definitely not as sweet). At first I bought 2oz, and then Teavana had their crazy 75% off sale so I filled up a 1lb tin. This should last me a while, since you can resteep a few times.

I love this tea. Very chocolatey and sweet malty notes. Add some german rock sugar and its even better. I haven’t had the time to sit down and resteep it so lets see how that goes.

I love this tea. I realize it’s a little silly to roll black tea, as there really isn’t a benefit to it… but it makes the tea pretty. This tea has a beautiful malty flavor and pairs nicely with milk.

One of my favorite black teas offered by Teavana. Being a die-hard chocolate lover the coca undertones make this one of my go to teas.
