So I decided to try more Oolongs from DT.

Since they had so many cake themed teas this month I ordered this as well.

Can’t really decide on the smell…it doesn’t smell like carrot cake but smells subtly fruity a bit toasty and very earthy.

Is a lovely golden color …blonde even.

Doesn’t taste like carrot cake to me..but isn’t unpleasant either.
It has a bit of tartness and smokiness.
You can taste the apple which I like.

It’s a decent tea but I doubt I would buy it again.I’m going to give it to my bff and fellow tea-hound lindairvine.

Lucy

I have wanted to try this one because I love oolongs.. but all the terrible reviews makes me think twice about getting 50g worth online =|

I bought a sample of this from David’s before Christmas, as (wanting to save a bit of money at Christmas) I put together some tea sampler packages from my own stash as gifts. (Share the joy, eh?) Unfortunately, blacks are heavily overrepresented in my own stash, so I picked up a couple of oolongs and greens at the time to round out my sampler packs.

The first time I drank this was actually Christmas morning at my grandmother’s, and I have fond memories of that cup. I didn’t bother to test out the dry smell at the time (it’s an odd smell, like what you’d imagine carrot potato chips would smell like), but I did like the wet smell. When I brought the steeped cup to the table, my family immediately asked about it, and actually identified the smell for themselves as carrot cake(!). Well, good job on that one, I guess DT. In the wet smell, the scents actually seem to come out in the order listed – apple and carrot first, followed by almonds and coconuts. It smells quite good, if you ask me.

Now, the taste…the first cup I had tasted very good to me, but I suppose I was associating it with Christmas, family, my grandmother’s delicious Christmas Morning Wife Saver, etc.

I’ve had it since, and I don’t know what I was tasting or thinking. It’s not awful, it’s perfectly drinkable, but… This just isn’t one I’m going to get again. It tastes like carrots…and coconut, I guess…but they taste…flat. Really. The taste is terribly flattened. It’s like a carrot version of a Fruit Roll-Up – with no real sweetness or spice. And I’m not entirely convinced oolong was a good match with the concept of carrot cake to begin with.

I’ve been having it with actual carrot cake in the mornings for breakfast lately, and suffice it to say it suffers terribly in comparison. Although I’ve been told it’s fabulous as a latte, so although I don’t tend to take tea with milk anymore…perhaps I will try to save the rest of the bag that way.

And I swear, I drink tea that I actually like sometimes! Maybe I’ll even write about them someday.

Usually, I drink my tea straight, but I read some of these reviews, and decided to add a tad of sugar and milk.
These additions made the carrot cake flavour really shine, it tastes like a real carrot cake without the nuts…..maybe I should add some forever nuts….I will try that some day!
I would up my rating but I really try to drink my teas straight to limit the calories I am consuming (losing weight is never easy), so the rating will stay the same.

I have to say, when I first found my swap stash with all these lovely fall tea flavors I was so excited and this one caught my eye right away. When I opened it up the smell kind of dissappointed me. The tea looked very fun though. So regaurdless I steeped this one up with breakfsst today. I over leafed on purpose so I would really get the Wow of flavors. The first steep kind of left me hanging. The second steep however I am enjoying. I just wish those flavors were more present. It does have the creaminess flavor from the icing aspect and you can tast the sweetness from the carrots. The coconut and spices however I did lose but I was surprised that the cake taste did coke through. I will have to play around with this tea a little more. Thank you ashleyef for letting me have a great amount to work with.

Curiosity lead me to making a cup as a latte, despite my fears that it might taste like spiced lotion.

The good news is it doesn’t taste like spiced lotion.

The bad news is that it tasted like melted lotion without spice. Couldn’t even finish my cup. Ew.

CHAroma

Lotion tea, blech!

moraiwe

At least it tasted like a carrot lotion, I guess?

So as I continue my venture of consuming all the “dessert” tea’s that DAVIDsTEA has to offer I have finally stumbled along to Carrot Cake Oolong. Which just sounds great to me, I like Carrot Cake and Oolong so this should be a great match…right?

As I write this I have a big cup of it steeping on my desk at work to write this review (it’s a slow day, don’t judge me!) and I must confess I received the tea last night and hesitated drinking it because of the dry smell. As others have mentioned here it does have a very powerful and slightly displeasing smell on the nose as dry leaves. I do not know if it is a combination of all the freeze dried goods or the coconut but it does have a slightly chemical smell to it. Steeped however it loses all of that harsh smell and transforms into more of a carrot cake aroma. This is what leads me to believe its a combo of the dry ingredients that gave it the bad smell.

Thankfully the taste is completely different, it’s surprisingly good nice and sweet, initially I can really taste the carrot and it quickly disappears and I am left with a lingering creamy sweetness. Not exactly how I remember my grandma and mom’s carrot cake as a kid but not too shabby for a tea. I think this one would probably make an awesome latte.

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers… This tea is not a big hit. I barely taste the oolong, it tastes more like a toss-up of coconut carrot. However, it isn’t awful. I can get passed a hot/cold cup of this easily.

Indigobloom

I wish they had given this a black or maybe rooiobos base. I get the impression those would work much better with carrot!

EarthernChild

I agree, a Ceylon or Yunan base specifically.

I bought this tea online from DAVIDs on clearance. I thought it sounded interesting and it was half price, so why not! The first time I drank this tea I thought it was just OK, nothing special. The second time I tried this tea I thought it was awful. Very bad artificial flavour, and leaves a bad aftertaste. I was packing this up for a tea swap last week and even the smell made me nauseous (not to discourage anyone from swapping this with me in the future, some people like it).

This isn’t a tea I can have all the time but it’s definitely better than I expected. I love oolongs which might have to something to do with why I enjoy this tea so much. I’m also a huge fan of coconut and almonds.

Just ordered another 100g of this tea today cause I finished off the last little bit I had left. I’m sad that this one is going to be discontinued right away.

I’d recommend giving it a try before it’s gone just in case you end up liking it!
