Daydreamer

Green Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Daydream believer

At our annual staff party last summer, we invented the best drink ever: iced green tea with mango-flavoured ice cubes. It was totally refreshing and subtly fruity, like drinking a cup of green tea while daydreaming about tropical fruit. Hence the name: The Daydreamer. We’ve recreated it for you here, with a sencha green tea lightly flavoured with mango, guava and mangousteen. Steep a cup and dream a little dream of tea.

Ingredients: Sencha green tea, mango, artificial guava flavouring, natural and artificial mangousteen flavouring, safflower, marigold.

I apparently like this tea much more than others who rated it.

I should preface this by saying that I love the taste of artificial peach and mango. As a kid I was a sucker for that peach drink they sold at malls bubbling up like florescent orange sugar volcanoes in their clear dispensers. Oh! and those peach gummies that are so chock full of sugar that I’m amazed my teeth don’t immediately fall out of my head with a mere glance….yeah! I’m all over those like white on rice.

Although the ingredients list makes no mention of peach, this tea really pulls on those threads of my memories….I say yank away! ❤❤❤!

I’ve had this tea twice now, and both times my dry scoop included some reasonably sized pieces of dried mango. I managed to get 2 steeps out of the leaves, although the second steep was diminished in flavor.

I have enough dry tea left for one more pot of tea, but I’m already planning to pick up some more of this one when I have the chance to visit David’s Tea. It’s light, fruity, and refreshing. It feels like a tea/juice hybrid. I can see how that may not appeal to everyone, but it suits my taste; particularly when the weather heats up. I think it will become one of my 2013 Spring/Summer go-to teas: if I manage to get my hands on it before it’s pulled off the shelves.

To me, this tastes just like another Canadian classic: Tim Hortons peach juice. I used to drink that stuff as a kid when my mparents went in for coffee (my Mum worked at a Timmie’s when I was very small and my Dad hung out with the bikers in front of the store). The only thing this needs to totally bring me back to childhood is a Tim Treat. Yup, a Tim Treat. Take a donut, add a mountain of whipped cream and stick a sugar candy face on there – BAM! I just liked the whipped cream and sugar, even then I knew that the donuts were big trouble : )

I will be fair and say that I sipped some pineapple juice before having this and it is likely affecting my judgment, but it took all 10 grams to make a pot of this so I likely won’t be trying it again. I don’t think there is anything remarkable about it (other than the similiarity to sugary drinks of my youth) and I would be happy living with a couple other flavoured greens I’ve gotten from DT over the years. I will be fair and say that this smells amazing in store – very enticing. That is what made the beau buy 10 g of this and another 10 of Strawberry Ginger, even though we both know better than to fall for the seasonal tea hype anymore. I need DT to come out with a good rick black tea. Preferably a well sourced pure tea, but a good caramelly black tea would work too. Mmm.

Anyway, this gets a smily face for reminding me of simpler times – though it should cost as much as peach juice would – this isn’t worth the cost.

Soooo i can get behind this tea. One of my coworkers who knows that i love tea saw the kind of week i’ve been having and not only went to her stash of tea to brew me a cup of tea and brought it to my desk, but also handed off a few of her samples to me as she’d recently been in to david’s to buy new teas. One of the teas she had purchased with this one.

Overall? not a bad little tea. It’s not nearly as artificial tasting as a bunch of teas i’ve had recently and it smells nice. so today…that’s about all it takes. is it friday yet?

So at first sip, I thought this was great. So yummy! the citrus was so balanced, without overtaking the tea. but then as it cooled… the orange became fake and I got notes of Jasmine underneath it all. Y’all know how I feel about Jasmine…
I couldn’t even finish the cup. Bleh.
This tea tricked me. I want a refund :/
(not on the money, on the experience!)

I like this randomizer. I kept telling myself to drink this before Kittenna and I swapped again, and I didn’t. But then the number came up, and voila, drinking it! So I have finally tried everything from our first swap, yay! (Thank you again!)

When I first tasted this after steeping, I was wondering what on earth it was even supposed to taste like, because all I got was green tea. A little agave later, I guess that’s mango finally making an appearance.

I get a peach taste too, even though I guess it’s not really an ingredient. Definitely do not steep this for 3 minutes despite it saying 3-4 minutes. There’s a slight bitterness at the end from the 3 minute steep, which is pretty sad given it’s hardly flavored.

If I wanted mango, I’d go for Mango Madness. In fact, I think I will mix what’s left of this sample in with a bit of it just to see.

Meh. This one was good, nice and fruity, but nothing to write home about. I feel like I’ve had this tea before, you know? It is a refreshing treat, and I think I’ll use the rest of our sample to make a pitcher of iced tea, but I don’t see this having a home in our cupboard. If I want a mango tea, I’ll reach for the Yerba Mate Mango from Tea Haus. I am enjoying this one, but it’s….unremarkable.

Cold steeped this and got nothing but bitter blegh. Definitely not restocking.

This one is nice and light. This one will be easy on my upset stomach.

The flavour is very light, I’m getting a hint of mango but nothing overwhelming. I was hoping for a little more mango flavour to be honest. I may try steeping it a wee bit longer to see if I can get a bit more flavour. I’d say this one’s pretty good but not amazing.

Update: I steeped this one longer this morning to see if I could get some more mango. No dice. I’m getting lots of green tea, but no more mango. Then I tried adding some agave. The agave got me slightly more mango but nothing spectacular.

So I think I need to call this entry, “The First Time Tea Really DID Taste Like Juice To Dan.”

Some of you guys may remember how disappointing the DAVIDsTEA Spring Collection was last year. It was mostly just…flat, taste-wise. I think I still have a cup or two’s worth of Tangerine Dream in my cupboard which I meant to drink up but didn’t because meh.

But I secretly loved this one, and got a whole tin of it full before it was gone from stores. Then proceeded to pretty much forget about it entirely.

I re-discovered it on my shelf the other day when I was looking for tea that I could keep down with norovirus in my system. I disregarded this as a possible choice, but vowed to keep it in mind as something to drink later.

I pulled it out this morning, and popped the lid off – it’s still full, I’ve basically had none of it since I bought it. Great investment, huh? I had to wince at how much this looks like an old Teaopia tea: a whole tin of cheap sencha with some fruit chunks in it. I’m increasingly biased towards teas with a sencha base, as fewer and fewer of them hold up for me as time goes by.

Uniquity has a review for this tea stating that she(? correct me if I’m wrong) thinks it tastes like – or the taste reminds her of – Tim Horton’s peach juice. I scoffed when I first read that, because juice is so obviously a much stronger-tasting substance, and I always used to be vaguely annoyed/subconsciously envious of people who seemed to have much more developed taste buds than me.

But now… No, she’s right, I tasted it this morning. Never mind the description of it as a green tea that’s mildly fruity, it darn well tasted like juice! That could be largely blamed on the amount of sugar I had in it, but I’ve used that amount of sugar before and never thought tea tasted like juice.

Then again, my tastes are definitely changing/developing in ways I never expected: I recently tried a cup of Fruitopia, something which I used to think of as refreshing, but which I haven’t had in at least a year. When I did, I was shocked to my core at how much sugar I can now taste in it; it’s literally so sweet that it coats my mouth and makes it sticky. There’s no way that shit is “refreshing” or hydrating.

Anyway. There was definitely a strong peach flavour that came through, despite the fact that this tea is meant to be mango and guava flavoured. I’ve been trying more guava-themed stuff lately, so I think I’d recognize that, but I just didn’t taste it. It’s peach and mango. There also seems to be some citus notes underneath…I was thinking it’s not sharp enough to be lemon, so orange or tangerine.

Maybe my thoughts are now biased because of sencha, but the base did not hold up like I remember. It was a little queasy-making because it was so sweet and the base apparently collapses when you add sugar (there’s a mental image), so pretty much for the first time ever with a flavoured tea, I steeped another cup clear. (New leaves, mind you, because I have way too much stuff to justify re-steeping much of anything. Plus, that’s not a fair comparison.)

And…yeah. Part of me is missing that level of sweetness, but the flavour seems better now. Of the fruit, at least – it’s not as sickly. The base does not improve, though, and it’s more obvious that I do not like it.

Oh well. It might be nice iced, and 100g isn’t much when you are making 700mL of it at a time in little pitchers. I’m sure I will find a use for it.

Oh, wedding planning just never calms down, does it? There’s too much to do!!!

I need some tea. So, I reached for this free sample I received from DAVIDsTEA. The dry leaves smell strongly of guava candy. Like super sugary guava. The brewed tea aroma is guava and mango and a little more subdued.

The ingredient list says that this guava flavoring is artificial. That’s a mild disappointment. But what’s more disappointing is the taste. This tea tastes like a low-grade bancha with very little fruit flavoring. It actually reminds me of some low quality bagged green teas I used to drink before I found loose-leaf.

For all that sugary aroma, this is fairly bland and leans towards the bitter side. Unfortunately, this tea has artificial additives and you can really tell. Thank goodness this was only a sample. I am not a fan.

Ha, I left this to steep in the fridge for around two days. Not my intention but it worked out in the end.

Dry, this smelled more like mango than peach. But yet, it both smells and tastes like peach juice. Not the juice crystals but the big jugs of peach juice my family used to by at Costco when I was a little kid. I can’t taste any guava either.

I love eating peaches, but never liked peach-flavoured or -scented stuff, so I thought I wouldn’t like this once I caught a whiff of it as I was straining the leaves and such. But it’s actually pretty good. It pairs well with the green tea, which is mellow and refreshing. It’s one of those teas that isn’t worth buying but you wouldn’t mind drinking it if someone put a glass of it in front of you.

I received this in one of my orders as a sample. I just knew it needed to be an iced tea to help combat this 100 degree weather. I also decided that it needed to be subjected to my first attempt at cold brewing. I have to say that my experiment was definitely a success! I’d been making my iced teas so far by brewing them hot, then icing them. This definitely brings out the subtle flavors more. As for the tea, I really like it. It’s not overpoweringly mango, the mango feels much more subtle, almost as if it’s enhancing the tea. Overall, I’m very happy with this.

This is very good and fruity, but not for me. I am not a fan of mango, but I do enjoy how sweet and fresh this tea tastes. Thanks, Courtney, for sending me a bit of this to try! I have enough for another cup, still, and I am thinking I’ll try cold-brewing my leftover leaves to see how that works.

Had this in a “to go” cup on my way out of DavidsTea today (see previous tealog on Ceylon star for my fabulous experience!) It was good, but I couldn’t tell if I was tasting the mango or the agave sweetener, and I wished I had skipped the sweetener so I could really taste the tea. It was very light tasting, and I even left the teabag in the cup the whole time I was drinking it and it didn’t get bitter. Might have to get some of this one just to see how it is without the sweetener, but it was good with it!

This is alright. The sencha seemed nice albeit a little quick to go bitter. Very sweet and fruity, dominated by mango. A nice tea, but there are too many similar and more outstanding teas out there. I’ll see how I like it next time, when I will try a shorter steep (3 minutes this time).

It’s a nice sleepy afternoon here in Northern Alabama, and with nothing to do but wait on the laundry to finish & read a book I thought this tea seemed quite appropriate.

Upon opening the little sample packet sent to me by the lovely Bonnie, it smelled fruity and sweet. The sweet aroma lingered on as it steeped away and as I poured it into my cup.

I added just the slightest touch of honey and this cup is all that I hoped it would be. Light, sweet, refreshing and fruity. I’ve had greens before that were overpowered by the fruit flavors they were blended with, but that is not the case with this tea at all. There is just the perfect amount of mango and the guava lingering in the background is quite refreshing.

A perfectly pleasant cup for a quiet afternoon! I’m wondering if I can get another steep out of it, not sure but I’m sure going to try!

I’m drinking this iced today because my tongue hurts from eating hot chicken wings yesterday (worth it). I put some agave in and it’s everything I like in an iced tea: fruity, sweet, and refreshing. I don’t even care how much artificial flavouring they may have loaded this up with, to me it tastes awesome hahah. I don’t usually even like mango, but it blends in so nicely with the guava and green tea. Mmmm

This was a decent cup of tea. Sweet, the sencha wasn’t too overwhelming, tasted mango-y. A bit too mango-y, actually. Getting into that artificial flavouring taste, especially for such a short steep time. I didn’t bother going back to finish off my cup when I set it down for a few minutes. Very unremarkable.

This one smells so good.
It is fruity, I have no idea what mangousteen is supposed to taste like, but for me, this tea tastes a little fake.
This tastes a little like the Green & Fruity rooibos to me.
2nd steep: 85degrees, 4 min, weaker taste but still ok.

I think I under-steeped this one with the water being too cooled of, so I was a bit underwhelmed. It is very sweet (and yummy) smelling, and as it cooled, I could tell it would be a nice iced tea. I’m gonna hold off on my rating til I make another cuppa.

Having this one iced! I do feel it is better iced than hot, but it will probably not be replaced regularly. There are plenty of other teas, green or otherwise, that I prefer iced, but there’s always that chance I will have a hunkering for it one day, and it will be the perfect thing.
