Buttered Rum (organic)

Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Yo ho ho-conut

Hot buttered rum is so delicious we want it all day long. Unfortunately, most employers frown on workplace drunkenness, so we came up with this rich and creamy alternative. Toasted coconut and vanilla beans mingle with black tea in a caramelized caress of flavours. Decadent hot or iced, it also blends perfectly with dark rum, brown sugar and a dash of milk – so go ahead and indulge your inner pirate, off the clock.

Ingredients: Black tea, coconut flakes, vanilla beans, cornflower petals. With organic and natural flavouring.

Allergens: Coconut

So, basically, if a tea has something like “champagne” or “whiskey” in the name, I’m going to buy it, if for no other reason than I can drink it at work and pretend it’s a lovely cocktail or glass of wine. Buttered Rum? Of course I’m gonna try it!

The smell is fantastic. I was basically huffing the stuff as Chloe was working her tea magic. The taste: rich black tea, with creamy butter, the barest hint of coconut, and rum. Rummy-rum rum. I’m drinking this first cup straight, and will be adding the recommended milk/sugar to the next.

I have plans for this tea, yes I do: the morning of the first snow day (yes, I get snow days: let the envy start), I’m going to brew a big pot o’ this up, spike liberally with rum, sit in front of the window, and simply gaze at the fallen snow.

A perfect tea for a lazy, starting-the-long-weekend morning. And my David’s order came yesterday, so I’ve got a big tin full to keep me warm!

Buttered Rum! All right! I’ve been waiting to try this one for a while. Thanks to Ninavampi for making it possible!

The dry leaf aroma is butter and coconut. Maybe a hint of vanilla, or I could be imagining it since I read it in the ingredient list and therefore know it’s supposed to be present. Mmm, but it sure does smell yummy! After a four minute infusion, the brewed tea aroma is heaven! Pure butter and coconut!

Oof, I really have the munchies right now. I hope this tea hits the spot so that I don’t break my wedding diet. It was my fiancé’s 25th birthday yesterday, so we went out and had ice cream, buttery popcorn, crab cakes, oysters, snow crab legs, and hot wings. Definitely broke the diet yesterday. Can’t afford to break it two days in a row. Plus, I didn’t work out yesterday either.

Okay, this tea is really calling my name. My stomach is actually grumbling in anticipation! First sip…wow, bitterness followed by coconut followed by a mouthwatering butter flavor. The aftertaste is by far the best part of this tea. I think I’m going to have to add milk and sugar though to cut through that initial black tea bitterness. Or maybe it’s a rum flavoring? Not sure if that’s in here or not.

Mmmm, much better with milk and sugar. Yum! This is a tasty tea. Not sure it’s killing the munchies, but maybe I just need a couple more cups. Second infusion for 6.5 minutes. Mmm, still buttery and coconutty and delicious! Thanks again, Ninavampi!!!

Sadly, this tea is just making me hungrier. I think I might order a pizza. But thin crust. And with veggies! That’s not too bad, is it? Oh heck, you only live once! I still have 8 months till the wedding anyway. :P And now I’ll be guilted into working out tonight for sure!! ;)

Well I didn’t break down and get the David’s Tea advent calendar, but I do happen to know that this is the tea for Day #1. And, I just so happen to have some of this tea that I bought when in NYC, so I decided to finally give it a try.

And, it’s not bad. It’s not the best black tea I’ve had, but it has some nice butter and rum undertones. I don’t know if this would satisfy someone’s alcoholic craving, but it definitely has those notes that peak through. As someone who rarely buys alcohol because it’s so pricey (and usually not very healthy), I’ll take it ;)

This tea is very tasty! And that’s high praise from me, a black tea novice. I’ve loved every other variety of tea, but black has mostly been meh for me. this one though! Tasty! I drank it without additions and loved the sweet buttery flavor. The rum is pretty apparent as well. It just reminds me so much of the holidays somehow. And the coconut is there in the background rounding out the flavors. I added a bit of almond milk and sugar at the end and it was meh. This tastes better straight. I’m thinking about ways I can bake with this though.

The tea leaves were surprisingly large. I loved the coconut peices and flower petals. Pretty! The tea base was unobtrusive and drying but not astringent. I wish I could say more but black tea is not my forte. This would be good with a sweet breakfast though! Like crepes! I haven’t made crepes in forever! Crepe party! My place. Sunday. Bring your favorite topping. :) I’ve got some speculatius spread and homemade kumquat marmalade!

I also want to add that the caffeine here is gentle but invigorating. I’ve had teas that kick you in the face with caffeine but this one comes up to you and gets to know you like a friend.

Oh Heck yes! This is GOOOOOD! I’m usually picky with black teas, so I’m happy when I find one that I like as much as this one. Since I’m so caffeine sensitive, it’s an added bonus for me that it’s low in caffeine. I’ve never tried actual buttered rum, so I don’t know if this flavor is true to its name, but it’s smooth and creamy and I love the vanilla notes.

Hmmm…Tastes a little weaker than I remembered (and I didn’t skimp on the the tea leaf). The luck of the scoop I suppose?
Lowering my rating a smidgen, but it’s still good.

GOOD MORNING last cup of buttered rum.
i overslept a bit. i need to go pick up my rental car and head north to my last marathon of 2012.
it will be my third marathon in 3 weekends.

Buttered Rum has become “the tea i’m always in the mood for”. i’m afraid i will miss it too much and have to buy some more immediately. but i really should branch out shouldn’t i? :)

one last brew before an evening with friends.

Dec 2012
i went to see Concrete Blonde last night
i brewed this in my timolino to drink on the drive there.
the first song they played was a Midnight Oil cover song. that was pretty amazing since it was the song my boyfriend sang at a karaoke party just 2 days earlier.
they also sang Take Me Home which is probably the one song that will sometimes always make me cry a little. in a good way.
life is beautiful and terrible and strange.

oh, and we had ethiopian food before the rock show. i ordered spiced tea. it was a bright orange chai served in a clear glass mug, and tasted lovely, but i should have probably added a little sugar to make it really dance.

First off, I had really been wanting to try this one, Jenn! Thanks so much, really enjoying the samples!!
Dry leaves smell like buttered popcorn and butterscotch. Pretty blend, I love the color of cornflowers. Steeped 1 1/2 tsp per 8 ounces at 205 degrees for the recommended max of 6 minutes.
Steeps to a golden brown liquor reminiscent of rum. The buttered popcorn scent seems to have mellowed out and the butterscotch has taken the forefront. First thing I notice is the good base tea used, especially for a flavored tea. It’s crisp and astringent yet smooth and not bitter. I expected a darker, maltier black tea but this was a good choice.
I’m not tasting a lot of rum. What I am tasting is butterscotch, for sure. Especially as it cools, and especially after I added brown sugar and a splash of coconut milk. That really kicks it up several notches. Lots of buttery butterscotch. But it’s a touch darker than butterscotch, if that makes sense. It has more depth and isn’t as cloyingly sweet. That’s what had always turned me off to butterscotch flavor in the past – it’s intense richness and sweetness. It still tastes like tea. A very well balanced tea.
I’m going to take off a few points because I can’t really taste rum, and I like rum. I’ll have to order some of this and try it with a shot.
All in all a very enjoyable, bright, smooth, balanced butterscotch tea that keeps me wanting more.

Jaime! Thank you!!!!!!!

She sent me some of this to try and I really REALLY Like it!

At first sip I could totally taste the rum comparison! After my first sip I started to notice some other things!

I could taste the vanilla as it cooled a bit but found it to be a bit peppery the colder it got, actually. This isn’t a bad thing! I think it contributes to that warm rum type taste without it actually being warm in temperature.

OH YES! And Coconut! LOVE the Coconut in this!!!

I like the buttery notes.

I was sitting here sipping – almost chugging, actually – while watching Harry Potter Trailers! I won’t be watching it this weekend when it opens but hopefully soon-after! Can’t wait!!!!

AND…I am throwing this in the SIPDOWN because I started and finished what I had today! :)

Pardon me while I backlog…A BUNCH…sorry folks! See previous tasting notes for this one…

Backlogging from when Steepster was down earlier…see previous notes :)

Backlogging an “Almost” Sipdown!
Still YUM!

I was sooooooo excited when I got this one yesterday I was able to sample it before but now I have it in my collection for a little while! YAY!

This is super tasty! VERY buttery-Buttered-Rummish! NOMNOMNOM

I got this tea in a swap. There was JUST enough leaves to make a small cup of tea.
The dry leaves smell just like butter. As it steeps it still smells like butter. I can already tell this is going to be really good, or really horrible.
Right now I’m tasting buttered popcorn. Not exactly what I expected, but different. I’m even getting a hint of salt.
This is a good cup of tea, but I don’t think drinking a cup of buttered popcorn is something I could enjoy frequently.
After reading all the reviews I really feel like I am missing out with this tea due to the lack of leaves. So I am not giving it a numerical rating and I am going to wait until I can get a decent amount of leaves.

OMG this is soo good! Imagine buttery, creamy rum with a touch of coconut… but ok to drink and (drink alot) while working. This stuff is amazing! Can’t wait until I can add a touch of the Captain to this tea.

I love this one! Perfect for my walk to work today :) So buttery & creamy. Delicious!

This is my first taste of any of DavidsTeas, & I’d like to thank Bonnie, wonderful Bonnie, for including this in my care package.

Dry, it has a bit of a pipe-tobacco smell. I steeped for 4 or 5 minutes, & the smell of butter with a drop of vanilla said, “Steep no more”.

It’s a dark tea, & rather than buttered rum, I taste butterscotch. Of course, it’s been a couple decades since any alcohol crossed my lips, so what do I know? Anyway, it IS tasty! A little vanilla, a little coconut, the butter-scotch-iness is decadent, especially lightly sweetened. I’m gonna save the rest of this sample to drink on Sept 19th, which is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Arrrrr…

Will Work For Tea

I got a decent amount of this from a couple of Father’s Day samplers and have tried this with a bit of rock sugar. It’s quite delicious this way. Creamy, rummy and vanilliay! Mmmmmm!

So tonight I decided to up the ante a bit. I have this really tasty Hot Buttered Rum Batter ( http://liquor.com/articles/in-defense-of-hot-buttered-rum/ ) in my freezer. I have used this to make said drink and it’s pretty good. But I had a lightbulb moment tonight – what if I combine the batter with some brewed Buttered Rum tea and a healthy dose of the Captain’s Spiced Rum. Well, let me tell you this is FANTASTIC! I won’t be making it a habit (because it’s ridiculous calorie-wise), but I’m keeping this in mind when the weather cools off considerably.

Will be ordering one of the larger amounts Buttered Rum once I place another DT order!

Courtney

I could just smell this and be happy I’m sure – man does it ever smell amazing!

Oh yum. A great combo of coconut, vanilla, and black tea makes this one delicious.

Thank you Bonnie for sending some of this my way!

I saw people rave about this tea for a good bit of time, so I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to give it a shot. It’s definitely not something I would normally think to get, but it’s really good.

The rum flavor is really apparent when the tea’s still very hot, but I am liking it more as it cools. It has a very creamy taste, with a touch of rum and coconut. Next time I am going to steep it a bit longer because it’s just a little too subtle overall at 4 1/2 minutes.

It’s also making me incredibly hungry and I have no idea why. I have to stay up for another 3 hours or so and I made this to avoid that happening. Argh!

My friend asked me to make hot buttered rum lip balm, so last night I finally got around to it, and now all I can think about is buttered rum. I still have some of this, it’s probably incredibly old by this point but it’s been in a bag in a tin in the pantry. So, actually still tasty!

Speaking of lip balm, I sent out 2 packages to Canada today, and the entire process is suddenly a PITA. Anyone else in the US ship anything to Canada somewhat frequently and notice this sudden change? Now they enter I guess all the information into a computer from your customs form and it takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R. It’s going to Canada, not North Korea, IT’S RIGHT THERE AND OUR BFF TRADE PARTNER WHY ARE YOU WASTING MY TIME I AM SO HUNGRY.

Okay I may be done complaining about it but it was just baffling all around.

I am not getting that much rum from this, the coconut is pretty strong. I let it cool off and it tastes far creamier and is tasting a lot more like rum too. Hot, it felt like the flower petals were even coming through strongly.

Can’t remember if I have reviewed this yet… oh well, I will now!

I bought 50g of this via the website in an order earlier this fall, then proceeded to forget about it in my excitement to try the fall collection. It waited, patiently, for me to give it my attention… and today I finally brewed up a cup and focused on the flavour. But I gotta say, I was disappointed! With all the hype this tea gets, I thought I would have fallen in love immediately.

Not to be swayed I brewed this again, but this time I made it following last years December DAVIDsTEA newsletter recipe for spiced butter—cream together 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg, and a pinch each of ground cloves and salt, then store in the fridge to use ANYTIME—and made it like a latte.

Now. There. Is. No. Turning. back. I’m addicted. I can’t stand this tea straight-up, but with the addition of milk & spiced butter it’s a whole other tea…

Had a rough day yesterday at a local craft fair, in which I have a booth. The only sales I’m making so far are to friends and family… but I could do that without having to rent a booth! So, I’m barely covering my costs at the moment.

Let’s hope today goes better, and this time I’ll be bringing a large carafe of this tea to keep me going while everyone just passes me by…

Straight: Not really feelin’ it…

Latte-d: Whole other story! Especially with the addition of spiced butter. Not quite what the doctor ordered (I currently have shingles, yay), but can’t really go wrong! Besides, I’m not supposed to take the pills on an empty stomach…

Oh YUM! First few sips tasted completely familiar… What is it? Yep – Werther’s candy! Weeeeird but also amazing.

The next few sips are more like what I expected – I’m getting notes of cocounut, butter, and vanilla. I can’t wait to try this with rum!

Erin

Drinking this tonight with some rum, milk, and brown sugar. Omg… I can’t believe I thought this was overrated before. It’s creamy and coconutty and sweet and amazing. But I think everyone already knows how great this tea is. So I’m gonna go curl up on the couch in my pajamas and drink this and watch some star trek.

So very tasty and just as advertised. I can’t believe how spot on it is and I am so thankful for the opportunity to try this one. Thank you Jaime

Chizakura

Typical. The one time I expect DT to miss the mark on the flavor — and buy the tea accordingly — is the time where they succeed. Admittedly, that’s my own fault, but ah well. So although unfortunately it actually does taste like rum, happily I taste more coconut and vanilla (which was what I was expecting) than rum, so I’ll be able to finish the 20g bag, but I doubt I’ll buy more.

Again, my own fault. If you like rum, go for it. :)

EDIT: Starting to rethink this note. As I sip further down, the less I taste rum and the more it explodes into an almost marshmallowy coconut. Think like those snowball things around winter, the chocolates with a mallow filling and with coconut. This tea is beginning to taste like that, minus the chocolate.
Already thinking I might make a second cup of this in a row… :)

EDIT 2: … Starting to change my mind yet again. xD; Now it just seems waaaay too sweet. Like teeth rotting sweet, and I didn’t add any sweetener…

I’ve been wanting to try this flavor for awhile, so I was really excited to see this in the Christmas swap package that Ninavampi sent me! The dry leaves are pretty, with large tea leaves and a pretty mixture of yellow coconut slivers and blue cornflowers – it looks like confetti! The tea itself smells a little like artificial coconut, and kind of reminds me of tanning lotion. One of my favorite decaf teas (Tropics from Adagio) smells just like tanning lotion and I love it, so this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The tea tastes nice even without anything added, and leaves a nice, toasty rum flavor in your mouth. The coconut flavor reminds me of coconut macaroons a little, or that may just be because I had some coconut macaroon ice cream last night. Although I like rum flavor, I’m typically not a brown liquor type of girl. However, I think this would the perfect Saturday night tea with a little rum and brown sugar, yum!

-Dry blend has large black tea leaves, pieces of vanilla beans, slivers of yellow coconut and blue cornflowers.
-Dry leaves smell like artificial coconut. Tea liquor aroma is of nutty coconut.
-Tea liquor is a medium orange brown color.
-Buttery malty flavor with a lingering baked coconut finish.
-Best with the smallest amount of milk and sweetener.
-Very good tea. Soft toasty coconut flavor.
