Santa's Secret

Black Tea by DAVIDsTEA

Need a little helper?
Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”

Ingredients: Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves, candy cane sprinkles.

Yum Yum Yum! I am NOT a mint in tea person. I received this as a sample and it just smelled so good! The taste is just as fulfilling. A nice creamy smooth mint flavor. I will definitely be buying more!

MMMMM…. Exactly what I need.

My house feels alarmingly cold. I’m snuggled in fleece with my big dogs. It’s our first winter in this house and I feel like we may need to better insulate it. This is my first reveiw it what feels like a long time. I used to do one almost every morning until my car broke down (the parts arrive tomorrow YAY!)
This is an almost overwhelmingly cozy tea. All I need to do is start my fireplace and then I’m doing exactly what this tea is intended for. Smooth peppermint, with a hint of creaminess, vanilla maybe?
I want to put up my tree now.

What is there to say about this tea besides..I want to set up the tree and start the Christmas music NOW! I took my chances and ordered online before the “smell test”. I am not a peppermint fan, but I thought that if it just had a hint it wouldn’t be too bad. I am glad I ordered it!

This tea smells like Christmas in a cup. SO GOOD! There is a nice smell of peppermint, not to overpowering and a little kick of cinnamon. Then the taste test. Wow, perfect! They got the peppermint bang on…not too much, not too little! This is a new fave in my house!

I enjoyed this one, mostly because I think it’s great fun to try someone elses favorite! I’m looking at you aisling :D

It was a great black tea, I can see why it’s a staple in many cupboards. Just the right amount of sweet mint. oo and I ate one of the candies and it was sooo good. It’s creamy and dark, I tried it plain every time and haven’t even wanted to try it with additions.

I did do a half and half with this and read my lips to make them both last longer as I’m almost out of both :(

Merry Christmas everyone!
Santa was good to us, and now I will make some mint hot chocolate!~ With baileys! yessss

(but first – TEA!)

Thank you to TeaEqualsBliss for sending me some of this tea. It’s awesome!

This really tastes like a candy cane! Yummy! It has a pleasant sweetness, and a good amount of peppermint without being too minty. A really delightful blend.

Today is one of those workdays where my brain decided to check out and leave me to my own devices (which usually results in me spending too much time wondering if anyone will notice if I go nap in my car). I needed a tasty pick-me-up to distract me from this terrible idea. I know the holiday season has long passed, but there’s just something magical about this tea that makes me continue to crave it. It has a mellow black tea base and a minty flavor, but more like a creamy vanilla mint with a hint of something richer. Caramel? Chocolate? I just can’t figure it out (maybe that’s why they call it a secret. Even the ingredients list is pretty tight-lipped). Anyway, whatever it is, it’s delicious. I was so sad when I finished that I continued to sniff my empty mug for the next half hour in an attempt to extend the experience. Damn, Santa did good!

I bought a little bit of this at the beginning of November to try. Another one I had experienced before but wasn’t super crazy about. However now I am craving it all the time like crazy, good thing it is in the tea for the holiday box!

I always thought I liked Read My lips better because it has chocolate. I’ve decided this one has redeeming qualities too, it is minty and relaxing, but black and energizing. If brewed properly it has this comforting candycane sweetness that I cannot get enough of because it is the holidays.

Sample sipdown #1 of the day! I still have a bit more of this in my tea for the holidays pack, but I finished off the advent calendar sample. This still tastes like Christmas. I wonder how it would be iced in the summer. It isn’t my favorite black, but it has its place on days that I crave it. Don’t oversteep or it gets really astringent.

Oh, wow… this is good. I love the vanilla-y peppermint taste, and even though it tastes like Christmas, it’s not like Merry Cranberry – I could really drink this one year round. Yum.

I’ve been hoarding this a bit, drinking it occasionally mixed with guayusa, but I have more coming in the mail soon from a swap… and I let myself have a cup today. It’s so lovely and minty and fresh.

I just finished my second infusion, and I’m wondering what to drink next. I’m so lazy today, I don’t even want to get up and make tea!

So I decided to try a holiday tea went to went to David’s Tea yesterday. I like this one, light in the minty flavor and it’s a black tea. he aroma was purely Christmas.

So I brewed this yesturday for me and my fiancee. I love this one, its just a new fave of mine. I am so happy that I have two collectable tins of it. I am going to save this and enjoy it all year long. I hope it makes another comeback next year. It really was worth waiting to get to day 24 for this one :) . My eyes lit up when I opened the last one.

So I had this today while at work, I made it for my morning tea time. I really love the scent of this tea, it is just so festive and inviting.

So I have been drinking this tea this weekend and monday and tuessday since I bought a tin last week. I will need to get another of these tins before the hoildays are done. I just love the candy cane smell of this tea and the candy cane and black tea taste. I couldn’t have any today because I ran out in my travel contianer.

Black tea flavour definitely present. Peppermint flavour throughout which is well balanced with the black tea. A little bit thin on the start but blooms on the finish into a very full sweet taste. The feel of this tea reminds me of drinking a cup of of thick hot chocolate. The flavour reminds me of chocolate mint. The slightest bitterness is present on the finish but not so much to make this drink an unpleasant experience.

I used 1.5 tablespoons of dry leaf for 375ml of water.

Astringency is not present with a shorter infusion time. Sweetness present. I really like the mint paired with the black tea base. The candy canes gives a soft savoury sweetness that trails into the aftertaste.

Completely worth the shipping from Canada.

Mildly minty, mildly sweet, good black tea base. All the flavors seem to blend well together and none overpower any others. Goes without saying that the tiny candy canes are darling. They melt instantly, which was my fear – that they would be that hard and cheap insoluble “candy” and be a pointless addition.

I wish I’d jumped in and bought more than the minimum.

Hurray! My massive shipment from Davids came in today!

First cup from the batch (I realize this is a Christmas tea, but lets just pretend it’s still December). On opening the package, I initially smelled a sweet peppermint that reminded me much of candy canes, but there is an underlying rich depth to the scent as well.

I have not had much experience with Chinese Black Tea, but this tea is incredibly smooth with a prominent peppermint flavor. However, the aftertaste shifts from peppermint to a delicate sweetness I can’t seem to put my finger on (I suspect it’s the black tea base). I am curious as to what spices were used in this combination, I can’t particularly pick them out, but I suppose that would be Santa’s Secret! ;)

Overall, a very delicious tea! I’m disappointed I only bought 50g of it.

This is probably the seventh tea I’ve had from the DavidsTea advent calendar. And probably the third tea I’ve actually had on its actual assigned day. I am SO BAD at this stuff! And don’t get me started on my 52teas’ 12 Days Of Christmas which I may or may not have ripped into every single packet four days into the thing…

Sigh. ANYWAY. I’m very picky about peppermint in my teas. I think it’s because peppermint tea reminds me of being in hospitals as a kid (I always got it with lunch). I can still drink it but I prefer if it’s mixed with something else. That being said, this tea is perfectly mixed (well, according to my tastes, that is). There’s the refreshing peppermint that is blends perfectly with the spicy black base. And the sprinkles are too cute!

Second steep. Wow, delicious. Sweet black tea taste with peppermint in the aftertaste. Definitely getting a tin of this.

Oh Santa’s Secret. Why are you so awesome?

I’ll tell you why – because you offer a delicious blend of subtle flavours that don’t overpower each other.
Chinese Black tea? Present!
Peppermint? Present!
Vanilla? Present!
Candy Sweetness? Present!

All that with spicy support from cinnamon, clove, and orange? Yeah. I’m sold.

Although this is a seasonal tea, I can totally picture myself drinking this while camping in the summer. It’s a decided favourite, and I’m not even ashamed to admit that I bought a whopping 250g bag of this to stock up for the year.

I think if this doesn’t get renewed again next year, I may turn my back on Davids entirely (yeah, right. good luck with that one!). But it really is that good.

Once again I find myself sitting around way too early drinking tea. Perhaps as a big ball of nerves I should be doing this more often earlier in the day instead, but what happens happens…that and it’s been nearly 70 for the past 2 days and it’s disgusting so 5am is a perfectly acceptable hot tea time.

The first time I made this I was not wowed by it like I expected to be. I had actually eaten one of the little candy canes the day before and I was pining for one. For some reason when I went to the store then I didn’t even buy any. And then this tea disappointed me.

So this time around I went for 6 minutes, which is a really long time when you’re pretty much just sitting there for the tea. So much better. The black tea base isn’t bitter at all from that long of a steep either.

I don’t know why I just wanted it to be in your face pepperminty (that’s what plenty of other things are for). And the spicy notes of it are kind of weird. It’s like pepperminty and peppery. It’s sweet and minty, then as soon as it goes down, it just ever so lightly bites your tongue with the spice. I like it. I wasn’t getting that before.

You have won your way into my heart, Santa’s Secret. And good thing you’re energizing since I am being suckered into going to the outlet mall in a couple hours, incentivized with the best donuts I have ever eaten. Too bad they won’t have more of this tea.

I am so upset because my new order from Davidstea should be here but the tracking has not updated since yesterday afternoon. IT’S RIGHT HERE. Stupid UPS. I can’t win. I avoid the postal service after this woman at my office was beyond rude and now UPS can’t even do things right in the city in which they are headquartered.
I know where you live, UPS.

So for now while I cry, I am drinking a cup of Santa’s Secret. There’s also this random pop-up thunderstorm right now and it sounds like someone is shooting a cannon outside. Oh and it’s also sunny. Happy March in Georgia indeed. So I really need something comforting and this is doing the trick.

I love how creamy this tastes without adding anything, and the peppermint adds this nice comforting smoothness. I love this tea. It seems so simple, and yet it’s so so good.

And now I’m going to go find out if maybe UPS decided to completely bypass my door, tracking, and everything logical and leave the box at the office, so then I can be angry and sad all over again and need more of this…except it needs to make it till this is available again because it’s a keeper.

Wow apparently I have not had this tea since last December. Let’s see how well it has aged!

Without even drinking it, I can tell you well. I am basically drooling waiting for it to cool down because it smells like candy canes. I really wanted something minty after loading up on the most amazing soup I have ever made.

Think baked potato soup…but using cauliflower instead. I LOVE cauliflower soups, this is hardly going to last 3 meals for me. http://traceysculinaryadventures.blogspot.com/2012/10/creamy-cauliflower-soup-with-bacon-and.html
I at least hope it’s supposed to make 4 servings, but I don’t even care.

Now I am freaking out looking at Twitter, like the stuff coming out of NYC is SO SCARY. Like every picture is more terrifying than the next.

I can’t tell if it’s just bad or what, but it tastes really, really astringent, and I can’t figure if that’s because it’s 11 months old or oversteeped…I steeped it for 3 1/2 minutes and didn’t use boiling water, knowing it’s DT.

Blahhh it feels really weird on my tongue too, do not want. May just have to get rid of this one…or seriously does it take like a 2 1/2 minute steep to get this to not be nasty and I never realized it?

Ok looking back, I didn’t like it at first, and steeped it SIX minutes and liked it. Yeahhh…probably not happening.

I recently received this as a gift from a good friend of mine. Holy fabulousness in a mug! I’ve been really partial to peppermint teas of late and this one does not disappoint at all!
The candy canes add a nice creaminess to the overall tea, and I find that it didn’t get bitter after sitting in the tea pot for a little while. The peppermint is not overwhelming at all, and the teas are extremely well blended. I noticed the black tea a lot more after it had been steeping a long time, but this did not detract at all from my original opinion of the tea. I’ll definitely be stocking up on this one before its taken out of rotation after the holidays!

“Hey little girl, do you want to know a see-ca-ret? Cuz I know one, and it is sooooo good to hear it…”

I was wearing a poppy today, so I got a free tea and I chose this over Mulberry Magic since I haven’t tried this yet. Reminds me a lot of Read My Lips, but with a much smoother mintiness and no chocolate. More akin to candy canes and peppermint, for sure!

I should’ve known better than to have that piece of cranberry cake… I paid for it in the middle of the night with stomach spasms. That’s what I get for being gluten-intolerant!

This morning, to avoid a relapse of symptoms, I’m gingerly eating a bowl of oatmeal and nursing a cup of this; in the hopes that the peppermint, cloves and cinnamon work their magic and soothe my stomach. So far, so good… the mintiness of the tea definitely pairs nicely with my cranberry-almond oatmeal.

Fingers crossed that Santa’s Secret will be my secret weapon against more spasms today.

This tea must be magic!

I completely forgot about it while my 13.5-month-old threw a fit about not being able to climb on the bookcases. Sigh. I nearly panicked when I realised that it’d been steeping for nearly 20 minutes and I only have a limited supply left. Amazingly, it was still warm, creamy and delicious. No need to add milk or sugar.

It’s a Christmas miracle… just not Christmas anymore…

Three words. Liquid. Candy. Canes.

Two more words: Two. Steeps.

That is all.
