Coco Chai Rooibos

Chai Rooibos Blend by DAVIDsTEA

A spicy adventure
If you’re into spice-based chais, this one is for you. It’s got a smooth base of caffeine-free rooibos, and a satisfying kick of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and piquant red peppercorns. Plus there’s a strong hint of coconut, for a slightly exotic twist. Try it straight up or infused in hot milk for a truly fabulous chai latte. It’s the kind of thing you get addicted to.

Ingredients; Rooibos, coconut, cinnamon, ginger root, cardamom, cloves, pink peppercorns.

I wasn’t expecting to like this one, But it surprised me. It all goes together so well. A hint of coconut, strong ginger, and loving the kick of red peppercorns!! This tea definitely makes me want to snuggle under a blanket and do sweet nothing all day! :) this is actually my first chai tea if you can believe it! I feel like I have just discovered a long lost love!

So this is day three of my advent calendar. I am not the biggest fan of chai, so I wasn’t particularily excited to try it out. The smell was part rooibos/ part chai… and same with the taste. I was actually fine with the taste. That was until my stomach started hurting really bad. So I have figured that the worst thing of chai tea is that my stomach doesnt like it.

First cup: Steeped 5 minutes
The cinnamon is the strongest note, with the various spices also rounding out the flavour. I don’t notice the coconut as much (it’s there, but not one of the major notes I’m noticing), but as I’m not a huge fan of it anyway so that’s just as well by me. I can tell that this would taste better with milk and sugar (the way that chai is really supposed to be enjoyed) but it’s not a bad cup on its own either.

Second cup: Same steep, around 25 minutes. Milk and 1 tsp sugar added.
Definitely better with the milk and sugar — more rounded out. The sweetness balances out the spice blend wonderfully.

Third cup: Same steep, around 35 minutes. Milk and Sugar added.
Ok, this is more of a half-cup. (The pot makes 2 cups clear, 3 with milk.) Cooled down a bit as well. The spices are very strong. Not off-putting, but strong, nonetheless. Makes me wonder how this would work if used to spice some sweet cider…. I bet that would be good. I may have to try it sometime.

The spices definitely leave an aftertaste, but thankfully not a bad one. I suppose it more speaks to just how strong the spices were in the first place.

Fourth cup: Resteeped. Milk and sugar added. Steeped for around 10 minutes.
The spices are still coming through very strongly, and I can taste the coconut more, I think.

The second half of the resteep went to my mother, who quite enjoyed it.

I also did a third steep. In general, it wasn’t bad, but the flavours were starting to mellow — the spices were starting to lose their power, and it needed to be clear to really be enjoyable.

My overall impression: Not the best chai that I’ve ever drank, but certainly not bad either. I know my mom likes this one quite a bit as well — she enjoys a good cup of chai and can’t drink much caffeine, so it’s perfect for her. Myself… I’d probably go with a different one if given the chance, so it wouldn’t be a staple for me, but I’m glad it’s there as it’s a solid non-caffeinated backup.

My rating: 79% B+. Definitely a good, solid tea. Not quite at the A level, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I’ve been on the hunt for a tasty rooibos chai for ages now and have always been disappointed in my findings. That was definitely not the case with this particular variety! This is hands-down the best rooibos chai tea I’ve ever tasted.

The traditional chai ingredients all blend together in perfect harmony and the addition of the coconut knocks it out of the park. If you like coconut in your tea and you’re a fan of chai tea, this is definitely the tea for you!

Once again DAVIDs TEA comes through with a delicious, well balanced tea that is very easy to drink!

Surprised that the average score isn’t 100%…honestly, this tea is incredible! So delicious yet unlike many other teas, I never get tired of this one!! I’m drinking it right now :)

I like this tea…it was my first David’s tea package I finished! I like most things that have coconut in them so this is a good one for that:)

Tried this in store today and loved it. Ended up bringing 26 grams home with me. It’s the best chai I’ve had, it had enough of a bite to soothe my sore throat, but it was a delicious blend of flavors, no one really stood out to me. It wasn’t “Oh, this is a coconut tea” or “Oh, hey, cinnamon.” It was just “Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm”. This is definitely one to keep in stock.

All the spicy taste of the Chai,
but the drink is smooth.
A subtile pepper aftertaste,
so… we got a legendary Chai?

If you’re a fan of the Chai blends, but the pure Chai blends like a Masala Chai, have in mind that it’s a smoother one blend. Lot’s of Chai i’ve tasted has some very aggressive spicy taste in your mouth. Like an indian Chai blend. For the beginner in chai tea I would say that Coco Chai Rooibos is the perfect first impression of a Chai blend.

So, do we got a legendary Chai Rooibos?
Yes, a smooth one.
A beginner one.

A Chai you can make to your friend who’s not really a “fan” of tea,
because he never tried a good one and he never tried any Chai in his life.

Finally, it’s a perfect blend for just relax in winter and during summer too,
because the spices won’t overwhelm you during sunny day!

I really need to raise my rating for this one.
I’ve tried it as a latte and… WHOA! This one is a killer latte!

This surprised me. I don’t really think of myself of a rooibos fan, but I’m starting to think that maybe the stuff I had tried in the past were just poor examples of rooibos. I also think that I enjoy rooibos best with other flavours. On its own I find it too… woodsy.

I actually quite like this blend – I think it’s the peppercorns that give it an unusual spice at the end that you don’t get with most chais. The spice makes it feel energizing without any caffeine. You still get that woody note from the rooibos, but the spice holds up well with it.

Spicy cinnamony rooibos…but I get this slight aftertaste of I don’t know what. Not bad but not my favourite so probably won’t be getting anymore after I finish the sample given to me.

Spicy chai with no caffeine! Nice!!
It smells cinnamony and spicy when brewed. I taste the cinnamon and ginger and Rooibos but not the coconut so much. All in all a flavourful cup of tea. I am drinking this straight…with what I have left I will have to try it with almond milk.

Yummy!
I didn’t expect to like this one; it came as a sample when I was stocking up on tea online (boo you DAVID’s for not having honey bush lemon ginger in stores! :( ). I expected this tea to be grossly spicy, but instead it tastes like…baking! It works wonderfully as a latté or straight up. It’s on my shopping list for when I am no longer poor.

I had originally received this as a sample with my very first David’s Tea order. After trying that one cup, I went online almost immediately and placed an order for 50g of it.

First of all: the smell is amazing! Warm, spicy…everything a chai should be. On drinking, I don’t taste too much of the coconut, but the chai spices definitely come through — and I can certainly tell it’s a rooibos (which works really well in this blend). All in all, a very tasty caffeine-free option.

This is the third time I’ve had a cup of this, and honestly, I love it.

It’s a mellow cup of tea with a coconut/cardamom flavor and a great way to unwind. I love chai, but always want some at the end of the day, when that caffeine would keep me owl-eyed all night. So far, this is one the better rooibos chais I’ve tried.

(Sidenote: I got this the first time I went to DAVIDstea, and I was so gratified when I asked for an ounce and the sales rep expertly poured out the tea, and didn’t ask me if more than that was okay. She did this with all the tea I bought that day, and it was refreshing.)

Pretty good, I mostly taste coconut, cinnamon, and a little pepper. Theres something else that almost tastes lemonish in the background? Maybe that is the rooibos. I prefer this with a splash of milk, doesn’t really need any sweetener…it has a sweet aftertaste on its own.

I wasn’t expecting to like this tea. Given that my friends are crazy about it and that it’s a rooibos, I thought that I would take one sip and say “no thanks”. But my room mate is slowly but surely going through the teas in her calendar, and this is one that we both wanted to try.

The first cup I had was “meh”. I think this was largely due to making a pot and simply not having enough tea. I purchased the chai sampler as a little present to myself last week and this tea came with it. It’s my favourite of the bunch! It’s my late-night paper-writing chai. I’m usually not a fan of strange things in tea (ie. coconut), but the spices together with the coconut create a really smooth blend. Not to mention, the rooibos is barely present in flavour – something I appreciate given that I’m not a huge rooibos fan.

Will purchase a tin when my sample is done. Awesome.

Finally getting to the last couple of little sample packs I have kicking around, some where teas I already had and other were ones I hadn’t even heard of yet from DT. This round it is Coco Chai Rooibos, and to be honest the dry aroma of this tea almost put me off of it because it was so pungent and floral the first thing that came to my mind was potpourri.

The taste is a little bit all over the place, I get the cinnamon nicely but there is a multitude of other flavors that I really can’t pin down to anything specific. I will say that even though there is a bunch of stuff going on flavor wise it is certainly a tasty tea. That being said I don’t think it is one I will go out of my way to purchase, as a few people here have said it would probably make a good latte but my sample was only enough for one cup so I wont get a chance to try that out.

Had this in my advent calendar. I really enjoyed this chai. I love rooibos in general so this was perfect. The spices were perfect. I didn’t put a lot of tea in my steeper, almost half of the little tin it comes in and I made two cups from it. You can taste the coconut, it’s very subtle, but brings down the tone of the tea and how spicy it is. Considering to put in my permanent collection.

Dry Leaf Nose: Spicy and woody with hints of cinnamon and ginger.

Liquor: Copper coloured with a spicy aroma

Flavour: Spicy yet delicately sweet, with a touch of woodiness.

I’m a big chai fan but I must admit in the past I’ve always been hesitant about rooibos, so I was very intrigued at the prospects of a chai rooibos. Overall though I was quite pleased.

The coconut gives the tea a slight sweetness which isn’t usually found in most chai teas that I drink. It’s still got the woodiness I’ve come to know from rooibos teas, but not so much so that it’s off putting. I felt the tea could be a bit spicier, and I’m assured that the longer I steep it the spicier it would be.

While it’s perhaps not my favourite (or my go to) chai, it’s definitely one I will revisit.

Lately I’ve been avoiding rooibos teas (mainly because I drank them so much I got sick of them) but this popped up in my DAVIDsTEA advent calendar so here we are.
I originally drank this with agave then had another cup of it without. I enjoyed both ways, probably with the agave a bit more because it really made the flavours pop. The first cip was full of coconut, which was really nice because I am a huge fan of it. The spicy chai balances out the sweetness quite nices and gives it a nice and full flavour. I’m used to having milk with my chai, but I didn’t find myself missing it with this tea in the sense that the tea carried itself well enough without it.
I actually enjoyed this quite a bit and if I didn’t already own so many teas of the rooibos variety, I’d add it to my stash.
