From Butiki Teas

Caramel Vanilla Assam pairs our Premium Taiwanese Assam with rich caramel and soft vanilla. The caramel and vanilla notes meld with the tea and almost taste as though they are naturally part of the Assam. Cacao, raisin, and citrus notes can also be detected in this smooth and malty tea. Add a little sugar for a decadent caramel vanilla dessert.

So last week I placed a Butiki order. Then I saw TastyBrew’s review of this tea & there was a conversation somewhere in the discussion boards about it too, & it was like: I must have this! I’m salivating already!
One of the awesome things about STACY is that she actually participates regularly on Steepster, & it was SO EASY to have her add an oz of this. I am SO GLAD I did! Because OH MY GOD, it is DELICIOUS!
Ms Theresa, whispering “shhhhh, little terri, use your inside voice”
LT “Sorry, it’s just SO YUMMY!!!”

So, I’ll confess, as soon as I opened the box yesterday I opened this tea & breathed in. The smell of the dry tea freaked me out a little, it’s very buttery, WAY buttery, almost too buttery smelling, & cream-like too. It’s SO rich smelling! I was a little nervous…

BUT I brewed it, & this afternoon I brewed another cup, & it is the best tasting caramel tea I’ve ever tasted. Unbelievably delicious. Also, I love vanilla, but haven’t been all that excited about any of the vanilla teas I’ve tried. Even vanilla comoro didn’t quite deliver what I was hoping for, although brewed double strength it’s not bad. I think the last time I had that, I said that I wished I could add caramel flavor to it.

My wish came true in this tea! The Assam is assertive enough to give the cup depth, the Vanilla & Caramel are so perfectly balanced but also strong enough to really be tasted. As far as I’m concerned, Stacy is the Mistress of the Arts & this is the quintessential Caramel Vanilla tea! It even re-steeps rather well! We love you Stacy! You Rock!

BTW, TastyBrew’s review of this tea is so perfect, that I’m just rambling!

TastyBrew

Yay!!! I’m so glad you like it too! It’s sooooo good!

jessiwrites

SO JEALOUS.

Terri HarpLady

The paltry oz I ordered is NOT gonna cut it!
“Please, sir, I want some more…”

TastyBrew

Yeah, I had her put some aside for me after I had my first cup. 1oz definitely not gonna cut it! I went huge and got 4oz. That way I won’t feel like I have to save it for special occasions. I don’t have that kind of will power.

Sil

oh thank god. it’s this one. I wasn’t sure that it was this one when you mentioned it earlier. Pretty sure i get 1.5oz of the 2 we jointly ordered

Kittenna

Yep, you get 1.5/2 :P I figured I’d be conservative and pick up more later :D

Sil

conservative! pshaw! go big or go home! which is where i wish i could be. YAY for more problems!

Terri HarpLady

little terri throwing a tantrum: “I want MOAR!!!”

Butiki Teas

Terri-So glad you are enjoying this! I never know how a tea will be received until it is reviewed a few times on here. I just had a cup as I was writing up the tea description. Yums! This will be up on our website in a few hours.

Fjellrev

Leave it to Stacy to create a dreamy caramel vanilla tea. :)

Rachel J

Ordered some! Can’t wait!

It’s so annoying when your mind is in the mood for tea, but your body simply isn’t. I woke up this morning and groggily stumbled into the kitchen, but no tea in particular was calling to me. Last night I’d had high hopes of trying some of my new teas this morning, but it was a different story when I woke up. So I brewed up something that’s tried and true, that I can generally rely on to brew a consistent cup. And it still tasted lovely and I felt all validated for having topped up with my last Butiki order, but I’m still just generally “not feeling it” as far as tea is concerned. Not a bad thing necessarily though, as I drink a lot of black tea and taking a break for a few hours never hurt anybody…much.

It’s Friday! May the work day pass quickly.

MzPriss

I have those mornings every once in a while. When I do, I drink coffee. I rarely drink it anymore but I still like it. The easy thing about it is – I only have one delicious kind.

keychange

That makes sense. I’m not a coffee drinker though, but I figure that not having anything at all would work too haha.

Cavocorax

Boo. Hope you snap out of it with the tea thing. I hate it when you stand ther ewith so much tea and nothing sounds appealing… :|

keychange

That’s exactly it, cavo! I was like how can I have 140 teas and not want any of them?

Cheri

Maybe take a break like MzPriss suggested, or pick a tea that is really different from what you usually drink? I hope you snap outta the funk and the rest of you day is spectacular. May the day pass quickly and easily, and the weekend be wonderful!!!

MzPriss

I had a couple of days a while back where every tea I tasted tasted BAD. And these are teas I love from the same bag I had been drinking from. I just didn’t have any for a coupl of days and it got better. I thought it was odd though

Cheri

One of the antibiotics I was on last month did that to me. There were just some flavors that were completely gone for a little while, and things just tastes awful.

Butiki Teas

When that happens, I like to restrict myself from having my favorite teas for a week, until I crave them. I usually don’t last a week.

keychange

All good ideas!

Terri HarpLady

That sort of thing happens to me as well from time to time. I normally drink black tea in the morning, but occasionally I feel kind of jaded, like, “I’ve already drank everything I have…sigh…there is nothing new under the sun…sigh…”. The first thing I usually do it drink a big glass of water. Then I’ll switch it up…drink something I normally wouldn’t drink in the morning, like an herbal tea, or white tea. Or ice tea.

Re what MzPriss said, I also occasionally have days where every tea tastes bitter, & my allergies sometimes mute my tastebuds, which is irritating because that special tea that is so nuanced just becomes a plain old cup of tea (& I start wondering if maybe I imagined all those amazing things I wrote, LOL).

Indigobloom

I’ve been there Keychange! It’s an icky feeling, like your hobby failed you. Not cool tea, not cool :/

keychange

Yes yes yes!! as if my previous recollections were wrong, or like my hobby—my escape from the world—is somehow broken and I can’t enjoy it anymore. And then you panic and think you’ll never want tea again.

Terri HarpLady

LOL, we all know THAT will never happen!

Indigobloom

Ack!! Exactly. What if you are all of a sudden OFF tea, forever?? As if that would ever happen, but then… what if it did?!
I found this started with me after I began my tea sommelier certification. Almost like knowing so much about it, tea lost some of its magic. But then it came back, just not to the same level of crazy for me.

My Butiki order should be in on Wednesday, so I’m drinking this down today. Now I’ve only got one Butiki tea in my cupboard! :O

I’m drinking this, looking at job ads, and watching Supernatural! This season (3) has Ruby in it, and so far I really like her. I also can’t wait to get to the end to see how they resolve everything.

Later I’m going to pack up some teas for Sil. Not sure when or how but I’m planning to see her before Christmas to do a tea swap!

Oh, also I really wish Steepster had a way to compare two people’s ratings – it’d be a lot easier finding teas Sil hasn’t tried if I could just hit a compare button. :P

Nxtdoor

Except Sil has tried teas that haven’t even been made :)

MissB

I agree with the compare button, or at least something easier other than scrolling through pages and pages!

Ana

I’m so jealous you have this in your cupboard right now. Mine has yet to ship but I’m so looking forward to it!

JustJames

it is the only caramel on the planet i can taste….. stacy is magic.

Terri HarpLady

Mine arrived on Friday. Haven’t had a cup yet, but I will!

Amariel

I love this one. I wish there was also a notes section so I could look up who sent me the teas, and any alternate or supplemental steeping notes.

You know when you’re sure there’s a sip down and then evethough you drink giant mugs of tea, there just isn’t enough to actually sip down? So now I have enough left for a single “normal” cup of this tea. I’m ok with that as there is a large butiki order planned in my near future. It’s actually part of the reason I’m trying to figure out which teas I’m very nearly done with to sipthem down and make room for them to come back OR be replaced with other butiki teas.

This one is very nearly always going to be a restock. I love the blending of the caramel, vanilla and Assam. Stacy pretty much rocks my world, even the blends I don’t love as much are always expertly crafted and have their merits :)

infused1

It’s hard to decide what to order from Butiki, isn’t it?
I got this one in my new order. I’m not a fan of blacks, but this gets such good reviews I decided to try it. Maybe I’ll take the plunge this morning.

Sil

Infused – some of Stacy’s black teas are amazing even for my friends who don’t like black teas.

Cavocorax

I love this one. Undecided if I like it more than the regular Taiwanese Assam or not so I keep ordering both. :P

Sil

I actually like the straight black better but since every day I bring a straight tea and a flavoured to work in my travel mugs, this works well having it around haha

infused1

I tried it an hour ago, and am afraid I’m not a fan. Maybe I need to sweeten it? I’ll try again, but I think it’s going to be a case of “It’s not you, it’s me…”

Sil

Not every tea is a win for everyone haha which is a good thing :)

Terri HarpLady

infused, if you tend to sweeten, I would because that will really bring out the caramel & vanilla. I like this straight, but I also like it sweet. Just saying :)

Not gonna lie. I’m feeling pretty special right now. It was an amazing day. Weather peaked out around 78. Unheard of and record breaking for Portland in March. After so much rain and gray weather it’s so much fun to see all the people suddenly emerge from hibernation and fill the streets and parks with nothing but laughter and smiles.

After an impromptu bbq at a friends and a few of my other favorite beverage, I got home to find my Butiki order had arrived already. The primary purpose (other than trying some more amazing teas) was for me to sample a few teas that may serve as the base for a custom hops tea that stacy is making for me. But the only tea I had my eye on tonight was the Caramel Vanilla Assam tea. Despite the late hour and my rule about no black tea after 5ish, I couldn’t resist.

This is brand new blend that she wrote about on FB and I asked her to include it in my order. And man am I glad I did. Cause seriously, I love when you have insanely high expectations for something, and not only does it meet your expectations, but blows it out.

This is no ordinary caramel flavored tea. In fact, it doesn’t even taste like caramel flavor. It tastes like if you were to plant a tea plant in a butter caramel and then water it with only vanilla and see what grew. Its as though caramel is actually a part of the tea. I couldn’t separate out the tea flavor from the caramel flavor. Like how the chocolate flavor is just part of LB, not added, but just a part of it. That’s how the caramel flavor is in this tea. It’s not an in your face flavor, but not subtle either.

In case you can’t tell yet, I friggin love this tea. Totally straight. No sugar/honey or cream. It reminds me so much of those individually wrapped in wax paper vanilla butter caramels you can get when you’re checking out in fancy grocery stores.

This is hands down my favorite caramel tea. Thanks for letting me try this Stacy! Please don’t ever stop making it!!!!

Update I had this again this morning and added some sugar per Stacy’s suggestion. The caramel flavor is even more pronounced. I think I prefer it straight though. Either way it’s super good.

Tealizzy

That sounds AMAZING!!

momo

want!

Butiki Teas

I’m so glad you are enjoying it! I wasn’t sure how this would be received. I recommend trying it with just a tiny bit of sugar. Its really decadent that way.

TastyBrew

I thought about adding some sugar, but just loved it as is. I’ll throw a few rocks in there tomorrow. Because I will be having this again tomorrow :-)

Terri HarpLady

This is the sample I want in my order!

Marcel Duchamp

yum, sounds like a good blend to me :-)

Butiki Teas

Yay, glad you are enjoying it that much! I’d love to hear what you think about it with a little bit of sugar.

Terri-I’ve already written it on your invoice. It’s the same base as the orange chocolate so, I thought you might like to try it.

Terri HarpLady

awesome! Yay!

Kittenna

NOOOOOOO why did you have to review this before I place my order. Now I want 2 oz. of this one too. Is it absurd to order 6 oz. total of PTA/PTA-based teas?!

Ysaurella

great review, sure I’ll order some !

Terri HarpLady

Yeah, Stacy, that sounds so good I think I want an oz also.
Better find something else to give me a sample of :)

Nicole

Gah. I thought I was done ordering tea for awhile. I need to make myself write tasting notes on my desktop and just save them and stay off this site for awhile!!!

Tealizzy

Stacy – when do you plan to offer it online? It’s still in the preliminary review stage, huh?

Butiki Teas

Tealizzy-The tea itself is completely done. It should be up on our website next week if I can get some time in to do a photo shoot, otherwise everything else is ready. It’s order-able now for anyone who doesn’t want to wait.

Tealizzy

Thanks Stacy. I’ll wait until its up, to help me spread out my orders ;)

Butiki Teas

Tealizzy-Great :)

Chizakura

Oh my gooooodnessssss, I HAVE to have this! I have to have it! Premium Taiwanese Assam is my favorite tea, and you’ve made me so excited to try this flavored one out! :D

I want to at least wait for my upcoming Butiki order to arrive though first. I ordered a couple teas I haven’t tried, and it’s entirely possible I’ll want more, so I’ll have to hold off.

Is this tea a limited time thing, or is it something that’ll stick around? Not sure if I need to panic order this, or if I have time to wait for my current order to arrive. xD

Butiki Teas

Chizakura-This is something that is sticking around. We may be out of it for a week or two but after that it should be available in full stock. I’m really low on one ingredient that makes up this tea and its not expected arrive for 2-3 weeks. We ran through the first batch before it hit the website and I’m already half way through this batch. I might borrow some of the ingredient that was reserved for a custom blend to make a third batch but I’m not sure yet. You definitely don’t need to panic order this since it will be in full stock within a month.

Chizakura

Aw okay, thanks :) That’s what I was hoping for, but I was worried, as you could see. xD

Alright, I’ll be patient and wait for my current parcel to arrive then, thanks. :D

The first tea of the new year! Everyone in my house is still asleep. Most of my guests from the party stayed over, so as not to drive on the dangerous roads. And now its 10:30, and everyone is conked out still. Thats alright, I get a quiet moment of serenity in the new year!
I had quite a decision this morning. The first tea of the New Year. Well, it had to be a good one, one of my favorites, to ring in the new year. This was it.
As always, warm and cozy heaven in a cup. It just makes me feel snug and happy, and I sipped it in a beautiful antique cup, and sat at my table, and was happy.
A good start to the new year. The only downside is that this was my last little bit of this! Never fear. It wont be gone for long. I know it.
Now, to prepare for when they do wake up, and want breakfast.

Fjellrev

You sound like a great host! Letting everyone sleep in, making breakfast, etc.

gmathis

Here’s to serenity, however it comes to you.

Last cup of the day! I drank this tea to ward off the ice cream cravings I kept getting tonight. Sweet and delicious as usual- It really did the trick.

JustJames

lol, i do the same! works pretty well too…

Fuzzy_Peachkin

It doed work well! If only I could find a tea that works as well on my chocolate cravings!

Short Sorceress

I think I’ll have to try that, I’ve been craving ice cream all week and it is getting incredibly hard to resist.

Trying this a second time (I had misplaced it briefly! The horror!) – my first attempt was not as good as I’d hoped, so fingers crossed #2 is better.

I think that overall, this tea isn’t quite what I was hoping for it to be. Yes, the base is amazing, and there’s no astringency. Yes, I can taste the caramel, though not a great deal of vanilla. Yes, the tea tastes good. But, I think I’d rather just have plain PTA over this blend. Or alternately, Two Friends, which is pretty much the most perfect flavoured tea ever. I’m not sure whether it’s just that I want more obvious caramelly/vanilla, or that the raisiny notes are poking out where they don’t quite fit for me. I mean, I’m not going to have any issues drinking the rest of this. And I’m certainly going to enjoy it. But I think my cupboard staples will just be Two Friends and unflavoured PTA, and I’ll leave this for those who will enjoy it more :)

I don’t care that this is caffeinated, it is delicious and comforting and I just needed that tonight.

Mmm…..

Two steeps, even. :)

(This is another must-have Butiki tea. Pretty much all my must-haves are Assams. Huh.)

Flavors: Caramel, Honey, Malt, Sweet, Vanilla

Preparation

OMGsrsly

Oh boy oh boy oh boy. The second steep at 6 minutes is, dare I suggest it, better than the first. I’m getting chocolate notes as well as the rest of them. So good.

OMGsrsly

(I forgot about it and it’s almost cold, but it’s still amazing and delicious.)

Sil

yay!

OMGsrsly

I also found my missing ounce of So Long and Thanks for All the Licorice. Yay! Now I’m not in danger of running out, and I can bring a couple cups camping with me. :)

Sil

YAY!!!!!! I wish i was looking forward to camping…at least after this weekend i can get on with planning our vacation/sil is GOING AWAY AND NOTHING CAN STOP HER!

OMGsrsly

Haha. Looking forward yes. Organize and planned, no. :) Hope the weekend goes quickly for you (I’m assuming you’re working…)!

Sil

i just realised…that i’ll have done 20 days in a row by the time we get to next weekend. lol no wonder i’m getting loopy at work haha

OMGsrsly

OMG. That is terrifying. I haven’t done that since I was stacking 3 retail jobs.

Sil

i know… it’s a little hard to believe… i’m in the middle of it to..so no end in sight until a week from now. But we might go to ottawa for the weekend, so that’s a nice end cap.

Almost like drinking Caramilk, although never as sweet and cloying. My favourite thing about this one is the hot caramel smell that attaches itself to the cup. I’ve found it’s a good tea to smother most dessert cravings.

I tried adding soy milk to it a couple days back and that completely diluted everything. Maybe a longer steep time would’ve helped, but I don’t feel like playing around anymore when I know I’ve got a good thing going already.

I love the assam base for this blend; I may actually like the assam more on it’s own than here. It’s going on my “must haves” list for fall, though. This tea, a warm fireplace, a textbook, and a chilly night sounds pretty fine to me.

Edit: I’m finally starting to like this tea in it’s own right and not just for its assam base. Being generous with the two teaspoon serving, and stirring after steeping, takes this tea up a notch for me. I normally hate adding sugar to my tea but this is one of the few exceptions where I actually don’t mind.

Preparation
Boiling 3 min, 0 sec
JustJames

agreed, it buries dessert angst.

Fjellrev

Oh yeah, the textbook would have ruined that experience. I seriously can’t wait to get my Butiki stuff from the group order, more than anything, to try this one!

tigress_al

Caramilk!! That’s my favourite chocolate bar! I was thinking of making a Butiki order but now I will have to try this tea!

CrowKettle

JustJames, yes, this tea was very effective for that until I saw the spun sugar image link in your note. Then I wanted both the tea AND the dessert. :P

This is no substitute for a real Caramilk bar but it does remind me of why I love them, and why I’m going to buy a big bag full of them in October or November.

OMGsrsly

I really like this one, but I know what you mean. You can’t underleaf it or it doesn’t taste right.

Amariel

I can’t wait either. I don’t think I got any of this in the order though, but perhaps I should have.
